DISK Specifications:
We do NOT have a definitive
list of disk drives that work in the mStation. The mStation is NOT
a PC and will NOT take
just any IDE disk drive. Here are a few guide lines to what may or may not work:
All figures are by observation and only estimates... Don't rely on
their accuracy or variability from one unit to another.
Damage to the mStation by using a unsuitable disk is not covered by warranty.
Damage to your Disk or any other item is not covered by the mStation warranty.
Breaking the warranty seals on the unit will void your
warranty.
The mStation car dick unit can only supply a limited amount of power to the disk
drive. This is most important at start-up where most disks require more
than double
their running current. Typically the operating current of a working disk should
be Less than 0.9A Max. and a Start current circa 1.7A. THIS
EXCLUDES Many 7200RPM Disks.
The use of disks outside this specification may
damage the unit. An 'out of spec' disk will probably work in the PC Bay as the
power is supplied directly by the PC power supply, The same disk work in the Car
unit but be overloading it - this will damage the unit.
Unfortunately
it's not that simple to look at a spec and guarantee it will work, many spec's
are not detailed enough to show. The proof of the pudding is to try the drive.
We are not aware of 'trying' damaging the mStation but we cannot guarantee this.
The following is for guidance:
- The disk should be 5400RPM or less.
- Most Notebook disk will probably work with an adapter.
- The Disk MUST be set to be a MASTER.
- The disk must be formatted as a FAT32
Partition.
- No files are required on the disk for disk to
operate.
- Disks with only three select options ( Master, Slave, Cable Select ) are
more likely to work.
- Disks with four Select options ( Master, Master with Slave, Slave, Cable
Select ) are less Likely to work.
- Disk up to 120Gb have been tested, at present the mStation bios is NOT believed
to support above 120Gb Disks.
Note:- A disk can only be format up to 32Gb with windows XP. To format
large FAT32 partitions it is best to use Windows 98SE.
Known to work Disks: Please note, firmware revisions have not been taken into
account, some may not work. If you let us know of working disks we will keep
this list up to date.
